Arrochar Parish Church has a long and exciting history. Here are some articles relating to that history. More will be added as and when we find them! Contributions are always welcome. Index of Articles The first article is by Rev. Ian D. Reid - the original manuscript of which is part of the Church's papers. Although not dated, a copy of this article was reprinted in the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times in January, 1959 and was later reprinted as a pamphlet which was sold in aid of the Church Fabric Fund. It is entitled "The Parish of Arrochar - A History of 300 Years." The second article is by Rev. William Barr Macfarlane, M.A., Second Lieutenant in the Fifth King's Own Scottish Borderers and was written in the years shortly before the first world war when Mr. Macfarlane was training for the ministry. It is entitled 'The Church of the Clan Macfarlane.' This article appeared in 'The Scottish Ecclesiological Society - Transactions, 1916-17' after the death of the author on 20th. July, 1915 in the Dardanelles. The article was accompanied by an appreciation of the author's life which is also included here. The third article is by the Rev. John Gillespie and is his contribution to the First Statistical Account prepared by Sir John Sinclair in the 1790s. The fourth article is by the Rev. Peter Proudfoot and is his contribution to the Statistical Account of 1845, although his own article is dated 1839. This is what is generally known as the Second (or New) Statistical Account. The fifth article is by Rev. Ian D, Reid (who also wrote the first article on this page.) This article follows the form of the two Statistical Accounts above and gives the reader an indication of what Arrochar was like in 1955. The sixth article is by Barclay Hendry and in reality is not an article at all but the text of a talk which he gave to the Women's Rural Institute apparently delivered in 1940. His subject: "Arrochar." Barclay Hendry lived in Glenloin House, Arrochar. The seventh 'article' is also, in reality, not an article but is a list of the Parish Ministers of Arrochar Church since its foundation in 1659. The eighth article is taken from 'Historic Families, Notable People and Memorabilia of The Lennox' by Donald MacLeod and published in Dumbarton in 1891. |
